Martian or Venetian
February 19, 2008Well the question posed by my friend is the previous post.
For you lazy guys like me, the question was as a women, would you prefer a male or a female boss.
Well for starters I thought well what a silly question. I had my answer decided the moment i read it.
But then I realized that it was from a very feminist perspectives. You know you have one of these moments where you have to support something just because you have to, or you are scared of losing your image. Like you supporting a film like aap mujhe acche lagne lage ( I went out of breath just writing that) just because you are a fan of Hrithik Roshan.
Well then I just realized, a preference like this one almost always have to be based on experiences. As much as I respect women and think they are on par with men on every thing and maybe even better than half of them, lets face it, women are hard to work with. Simply because of the way they adhere to every rule!
I am one of them. I go by the book. Its like the book is the bible. I am happy being that. I like being organized. Having an organizer , arranging the things I have to do. Checking them once i am done. Having post it notes in all shapes and colors and using them in every possible nook and corner of the table until the cubicle chokes to death. Well you the get the point. Being suprememly organized is something women like and will strive to be. So working under them is going to be wuite challenging casue well obviously they expect you to be organized and are very unflexible.
While men on the other hand, being by nature very carefree and non chalant( sometimes a little too much that it gets on yor nerves) they are easy to work with. I mean its just less expectation. You come when you want to, leave when you want to, work when you want to , it was enough to just finish the work. I mean that leads to a much comfortable life. And men on some level still consider them to be the safeguarder of women kind and are pretty sensitive to lady’s problems at work! Well I aint saying anything. Helps us!
So well its always a little hard to work with rigid people but way too easier to work in a flexible environment. So my pick , a male boss anyday!!!
What do you all you guys think? say it out aloud.
Well first of all, this is a weird question because of all the generalizations we have to make to answer it. But generally speaking
you are rite- women are more strict and ‘by the book’ leaders. In fact, women tend to become real competitive at times and this actually make sense if you think about it. When you are a sex that’s been discriminated upon and you’ve had to work extra hard to get where u are, that fighting spirit sticks with you. But times are changing. The younger generation women (like us) are getting things more easily now, so this is beginning to change. So, I believe the younger generation women leaders would be more relaxed and fun to work with. And if a woman doesnt choose to work with and support another woman leader, I don’t know who will. So, I would go for a woman boss.
Like you intitially said, it all depends on experience and from my experience, it’s really hard to come to a conclusion. I think it hardly matters if the boss is male or female – it depends on their personality. But having said that, I agree that the woman manager I had during my internship was the organized, conscientious types but I had loads of fun coz she used to treat me like a regular girlfriend and we used to have discussions on everything from my love life to pap smear tests! I miss that female bonding now. But to give credit to my current male manager, I must say he’s really laid back and encourages me to take time off more often than not! He doesn’t drive me on deadlines but again that could be because I myself do the necessary dtiving!
That was my 2 cents for what it’s worth .:)
Oh and I thought Venetian pertains to Venice….not Venus…ain’t it?
I agree with both the comments that have been made:
a. Its too hard to generalize
b. It depends on experience.
More than saying that women are more organized, I think it depends on the what kind of a person you are and what you expect of your boss (complement or align with your interests). The engineer in me wants to draw a small state table here. But yeah, as long as I am challenged, motivated and encouraged, the gender of my manager doesn’t matter.
Hmmm… i agree!! i would pick a male boss anyday… but my reason would not be based on the generic assumption that women are more organized than men coz personally i have come across men paranoid abt being organized and i don believe its a chracteristic specific to women
i would prefer a male boss for first of all we get loads of leverage on deadlines, work, leave etc…. if i gain an advantage out of it well it would be gr8 to use it…
and then again GQ(nivi, nyabagam irukaa???!!
) always comes to our aid…
in any case a male boss(VB ,MB, KB… the list goes on) will certainly be easier to work than a female boss…
kudos on the effort ad the concept guys!!
Thanks Anu for acknowledging the effort
